Talk event: After the screenings

Tokyo Filmgoer prides itself on staying ahead of the curve — but we are only as good as our intelligence gathering, and when a film festival fails to publicly announce that it is screening work with English subtitles, the secret usually stays hidden.

ケンとカズ|Ken and Kazu (Japanese with English subtitles)

So we apologize for this late posting, but after a flurry of phone calls, we have confirmed that yes, the week-long Japan & Hong Kong Independent Cinema Festival being held at Theatre Shinjuku features a double-bill lineup of terrific English-subbed Japanese indies, a small but perfectly curated package. Added bonus: all screenings are followed by director/cast Q&A sessions.

ディアーディアー|Dear DEER (Japanese with English subtitles)

FAKE (Japanese with English subtitles)

In the lineup are Tokyo Filmgoer (and international festival) favorites like Takeo Kikuchi’s Deer Dear (2015), about the appearance of an extinct Ryomo deer and the concurrent breakdown of a family; Hiroshi Shoji’s moving tragedy about two smalltime drug dealers, Ken and Kazu (2016); Eiji Uchida's pitch-black satire of the indie film world, Lowlife Love (2015); Masashi Yamamoto's The Voice of Water (2014), about a cult priestess who begins developing the powers she’s been faking; and Tatsuya Mori’s documentary Fake (2016), about the disgraced musician, Mamoru Samuragochi, who was once known as the Japanese Beethoven. Also on the bill is Ryusuke Hamaguchi’s (Happy Hour) The Depths (2010), a tale of desire between a Korean photographer and a male escort in Tokyo.

下衆の愛|LOWLIFE LOVE (Japanese with English subtitles)
水の声を聞く|The Voice of Water (Japanese with English subtitles)

The Hong Kong lineup is subtitled only in Japanese, but includes several Japan premieres, including Yellowing (2016), Chan Tze-woon's documentary about the “umbrella movement” demonstrations.

THE DEPTHS (Japanese with English subtitles)

新世界の夜明け|New World — Shinsekai Story
Unfortunately in Chinese and English with Japanese subtitles
