If you’re interested in outré indie sci-fi cinema, then the Reunion series is for you. Directed by Jun Kitamikado, the first two mid-length feature episodes and a spinoff are set in the Zero Point Field Bar, which drifts along in another dimension. The bar attracts customers of all eras and origins — and that’s what Kitamikado hopes will happen in mid-June in Kawaguchi, when the three films screen at the 8^th Film Theater with English subtitles. Audiences are encouraged to visit Bar Sci-Fi World, where special drinks named after the characters will be available at the venue.

In Reunion: 01 At the End of the Night (2021), we meet the owner of Zero Point Field, Mika, who used to be human, but lost the lower half of her body in an accident and became a cyborg. Mika also lost all memories of her human life. One day, a man appears who knows about Mika’s past, and with the help of the bar’s regulars, she sets off on a journey through time and space in search of something important that she’s left behind.

RISE OF SHINJOE (2021)

In the spin-off short Rise of Shinjoe (2021), Rah-san and Shinjoe, regulars at the Zero Point Field bar, get their own film. Both have lost their wives, and one day, Rah-san recalls when Shinjoe’s wife, Ryoko, was seriously ill and an exorbitant sum of money was needed for her treatment. Shinjoe scrambles to raise the it, but in vain, and Ryoko dies. One year later, on Christmas eve, a miracle happens to Shinjoe, who is in grief over a drink at the bar.

REUNION: 02 Genesis (2023)

In Reunion: 02 Genesis (2023), the story turns the world’s existence upside down as it follows the prequel and sequel of Doc, the genius surgeon, Melda, the arms dealer, and Yuri, the 100-year-old robot, who appeared in the first film. Yuri is accidentally transported to a parallel world, where he meets Ayumi, a woman who looks exactly like Mika, owner of the Zero Point Field bar. But that world is destined to be destroyed by a comet impact the very next day.

Kitamikado was once an adolescent 8mm filmmaker, but didn’t make films for about 30 years. In his 50s, he decided to direct once again, and began the Reunion series. Planning is currently underway for the completion of the final chapter, Reunion: 03 Daydream, to be released in fall 2026.
