Title: 名探偵コナン 隻眼の残像 (Meitantei Conan Sekigan no Zanzo)
Director: Katsuya Shigehara (重原克也)
Duration: 110 min

You may already know that anime features regularly dominate Japan’s box office, and that the Detective Conan series is one of the perennial champions. Since 1997, the franchise has bowed a new original mystery film almost every spring (skipping only 2020), drawing millions to theaters year after year. Now in its 28th installment, Detective Conan: Flashback continues the tradition — and with the English-subtitled version being included in the annual domestic rollout, international fans can take part too.

This year’s case takes Conan Edogawa to the snowy mountains of Nagano, where a new murder bears a disturbing resemblance to an old, unresolved incident. The spotlight shifts to scar-faced police inspector Kansuke Yamato, who finds himself revisiting a case that still haunts him, both professionally and personally. When a body is discovered in the snow and clues begin linking it to events from decades ago, Conan must untangle past and present to uncover the truth.

Unlike the more action-heavy recent installments, One-Eyed Flashback leans into psychological suspense. The mountain setting, with its frozen roads, dark tunnels and remote police stations, adds a foreboding edge to the story. Fans of the wider Conan universe will be pleased by the return of familiar faces, including Rei Furuya, Yuya Kazami, and Takaaki Morofushi — while new characters like Madoka Tsuburai (played by former Nogizaka46 member Mizuki Yamashita) add fresh tension to the investigation.

Director Katsuya Shigehara makes his series debut, bringing a more intimate, character-focused approach to the mystery. “I wanted to explore how detectives carry the weight of unsolved cases,” he told Animage magazine. Screenwriter Takeharu Sakurai, a franchise regular, crafts a tightly-wound narrative centered on memory, guilt, and redemption. Yugo Kanno’s atmospheric score, paired with King Gnu’s striking theme song “Twilight!!!,” helps give the film a darker, more mature tone.

Ultimately, it’s not just the mysteries that keep people coming back each year — it’s the emotional journeys of its characters. One-Eyed Flashback is a reminder of why Detective Conan remains one of Japan’s most enduring film series: clever storytelling, evolving character arcs, and a mystery worth solving on the big screen.
