Calling all kaiju fans! Gamera, the giant, fire-breathing flying turtle, born in 1965, returns to the big screen in celebration of its 60th anniversary —bold, roaring and reborn in three newly completed 4K digital restorations, each supervised by Shinji Higuchi (Shin Godzilla, Shin Ultraman) and timing master Shunichi Ogura, who meticulously revived the visual texture and atmosphere of the original low-sensitivity film stock. And they feature English subtitles! For longtime fans and first-time viewers, this is the definitive way to experience the earliest age of Gamera.

The lineup begins with Gamera: The Giant Monster (1965), the film that introduced audiences to the legendary prehistoric kaiju as he emerged from the Arctic ice. Shot in luminous black-and-white, the film’s restoration brings out details unseen for decades—the grain, the shadows, the sculpted texture of the suit design—discoveries revealed by what Higuchi describes as “a wonderfully happy task to excavate.”
The program continues with the first two sequels, now brilliantly restored in color: Gamera vs. Barugon (1966), featuring Gamera’s first enemy and a chilling battle that freezes Osaka Castle, and Gamera vs. Gyaos (1967), where the razor-sharp Gyaos slices through the Shinkansen and Nagoya Castle with its ultrasonic beam. These films mark the franchise’s evolution into high-energy kaiju spectacle, laying the foundations for generations of monster cinema to come.
Together, these three films form a rare opportunity to witness the birth and early growth of a cinematic icon—now sharper, richer and more alive than ever. Whether you come for nostalgia, kaiju history, or pure giant-monster exhilaration, the Gamera 60th Anniversary screenings promise a thrilling (re)discovery of one of Japan’s most enduring screen heroes.
