Title: 惑星ラブソング (Wakusei Rabe Songu)
Director: Hideyuki Tokigawa (時川英之)
Duration: 102 min

Hideyuki Tokigawa’s magical-realist tale Love Song from Hiroshima is playing with English subtitles at Uplink. Blending stories from Hiroshima's past with a present-day visit by an American, the film is a love letter to the city, and a paeon to peace, in this 80th anniversary year since the end of WWII.

Two local youths, Mocchi (Ryusuke Soda) and Ayaka (Shiori Akita), meet an odd American visitor named John (Chase Ziegler, a Los Angeles–based actor/producer) and begin to guide him through Hiroshima, but they soon realize John isn’t just any tourist—he has a strange ability to sense hidden fragments of the city’s past. Meanwhile, a young boy named Yuya, frightened after learning about the atomic bombing in school, is led in a dream by a mysterious girl into the Hiroshima of the wartime era. There is also a strange light in the night sky, attracting the visit of a quirky UFO expert (Tomohito Yashima).

As all the stories converge, the lines between dream and reality, between then and now, begin to blur and a long-forgotten song of peace begins to echo through Hiroshima—as a miracle quietly unfolds.

Tokigawa, a Hiroshima native with extensive experience overseas and with global studios in Japan, draws from his ongoing exploration of the city’s layered identity to create a powerful work that builds to an emotional crescendo. His film is currently making the rounds of the international festival circuit, with upcoming screenings in LA and the European Premiere at Raindance in London.
