Title: 男神 (Otokogami)
Director: Masaki Inoue Duration: 93 min

You’ve surely heard that Japan is filled with a staggering variety of yurei and demons. One of these is the Otokogami (literally, Male God), who snatches young boys away for nefarious reasons. Just in time to get your horror fix before Halloween arrives, a terrifying reimagining of the ancient legend has arrived in theaters and will be screening with English subtitles for a week in Shibuya. The outgrowth of a story that went viral on YouTube, Masaki Inoue’s Otokogami transforms the tale into a cinematic exploration of fear and human resilience, blending folklore with contemporary horror and definitely raising the hairs on your neck.

As a series of mysterious disappearances of mothers and children occur across the country, Yuki Wada (Yuya Endo), a construction company employee, discovers a buried cultural asset during construction in a new housing development in Nissei City. A few days later, a deep sinkhole emerges at the construction site, halting all work. Almost simultaneously, Yuki’s young son vanishes without a trace into this abyss.

Desperate to find him, Yuki ventures into the hole, which leads to a shadowy forest where beautiful women in kimono and shrine maidens are performing a mysterious ritual to appease a male deity. Inexplicably, his wife, shrine maiden Natsuko (Sho Ayana) is among them. Determined to rescue his child, Yuki ventures into this forbidden realm, and must confront both supernatural forces and human obsession.

Building tension through eerie landscapes, ritualistic ceremonies, and psychological suspense, Otokogami also includes some rare English-language scenes featuring former King & Prince idol Genki Iwahashi. He plays Yuto Yamashita, a construction worker who assists Yuki in trying to save his son, and chats with an American archeologist who gets drawn into the mystery of the disappearances.
