Title: ショートショート フィルムフェスティバル & アジア 2016 (SHORT SHORTS FILM FESTIVAL & ASIA 2016)
The Short Shorts Film Festival & Asia (SSFF & Asia) continues to be a juggernaut, with another extraordinary lineup in its 18th year and an exhaustive schedule of screenings and events that are almost all free.
The Japan-born, Academy Award®-accredited fest opens on June 2 and runs for nearly a month (!!!) at six venues around Tokyo (Omotesando Hills Space O, Laforet Museum Harajuku, Shidax, Andaz, Itscom Hall at Futako-Tamagawa Rise) and at Yokohama's Brillia Shortshorts Theatre.
This year’s theme is “Cinema Carnival: Explore Your Emotions,” and there’s even a festival theme song recorded by PKCZ feat. Crystal Kay and Mighty Crown. Due to its strong ties with Hollywood heavyweights like George Lucas and Martin Scorsese, among others, and due to its Oscar-qualifying appeal, SSFF 2016 received over 6,000 submissions from over 100 countries, with 200 titles selected for 7 categories this year. The Grand Prix winner is automatically eligible for nomination in one of the short film competitions at the Academy Awards® in 2017 (as well as taking home ¥600,000). Prizes are also awarded in each of the other categories.
There are over 40 Japanese films on display, mostly in the Asia International & Japan, Music, CG Animation and Children programs, as well as the Andaz Tokyo Special Program. Among the Japan-related highlights (these are all paying events), hot actor/short filmmaker Takumi Saitoh will screen his work and discuss his career, former Pixar animation artist Daisuke “Daice” Tsutsumi will screen his directorial debut and other work, Naomi Kawase will conduct a master class, and celebrity photographer Leslie Kee will present his directorial debut, on designer Yohji Yamamoto.
As everyone now knows, short films are an art form unto themselves, and the major calling card for young filmmakers trying to break into the big time. They’re also increasingly a way for established directors to keep their hand in, to flex creative muscles in a short format. In these days of outrageously long features, there is nothing quite as satisfying as watching a 3 – 25-minute work and longing for it to continue when it ends.
The SSFF & Asia website receives Tokyo Filmgoer’s vote for the best English-language festival resource in Japan, so plan to explore it thoroughly. There are dozens of non-Japanese films on show as well, all screening either in English or with English subs. Toplining stars include the likes of Leo Di Caprio, Robert De Niro and newly minted Oscar winner Brie Larson.
Remember: almost all the screenings, seminars and other events are FREE — just sign up on the SSFF & Asia website.
