Title: 君たちはどう生きるか (Kimitachi wa Do Ikiruka)
Director: Hayao Miyazaki (宮崎駿)
Duration: 124 min
The widely hailed English-dubbed version of Hayao Miyazaki’s Oscar-winning The Boy and The Heron is returning the Stranger Theater for those who missed it on its first run in spring. Although many of us would prefer to see the film with English subtitles, we admit we enjoyed the film even more in this version, which allowed us to fully savor the legendary director’s visually stunning achievement.

Studio Ghibli places a great deal of importance on its English voiceover dubs, and the English voice cast for The Boy and the Heron boasts quite a lineup of A-list talent, including Christian Bale, Florence Pugh, Robert Pattinson, Mark Hamill, Dave Bautista, Willem Dafoe, Gemma Chan and others.
Miyazaki's 12th feature (and perhaps his last) tells a very personal story about a young boy named Mahito who must adjust to a new home and a new stepmother during World War II. As he explores his neighborhood, he encounters an unusual grey heron and finds himself swept into a parallel world. As always with the legendary director’s work for Studio Ghibli, that world is populated with all manner of mythical creatures and Mahito must overcome many magical challenges, finally reevaluating his relationship with grief, family and adult responsibilities.
