Title: 二十四の瞳 デジタル修復版 (Niju Shi no Hitomi Dezitaru Shufukuban)
Director: Keisuke Kinoshita (木下恵介)
Duration: 156 mins
Marking the centenary of legendary actress Hideko Takamine’s birth, Shochiku’s Togeki theater will be screening one of her most iconic performances, as Hisako Oishi, a beloved schoolteacher, in Twenty-Four Eyes: Digitally Restored Version, with English subtitles. If you’re like most of us and have never seen this classic on the big screen, here’s your chance.

Originally released in 1954, Keisuke Kinoshita’s Twenty-Four Eyes was an enormous critical and commercial success, winning the Blue Ribbon Award, the Mainichi Film Award and the Kinema Junpo Award for Best Film of 1954, as well as the Golden Globe Award for Best Foreign Film.
Set on the bucolic island of Shodoshima in Japan’s Seto Inland Sea in 1928, it follows the arrival of the new teacher (Takamine) as she forges enduring bonds with her 12 young students over a period during which they all experience the rise and fall of Japanese nationalism in the early Showa period.
Oishi rides a bicycle and wears Western clothing, which don’t endear her to the adults in the village at first; but the children adore her. After she suffers an injury and is transferred to another school, she continues to keep in touch with her former students, but their hopes and dreams die as poverty, disease and finally war tragically alter their fates. Oishi, too, must endure the unendurable. But the cycle of life is strong, and when she returns to the island as a teacher once again, hearts lift.
This is a three-packet tissue film, so be sure to come prepared.
